Genomics can identify top producers

When looking at a row of calf hutches, how do you know which calf will be your next top producer? Which ones will help improve your herd in three to five years? Genomics can help you accurately identify those high performers so you can reach your goals.

But before going all in with testing, make sure you know where you want to go. Remember, testing without a plan could be a missed opportunity.

  • What are your operation’s long-term goals?
  • What kind of cow do you need in order to be more competitive, efficient and profitable?
  • Do you have more heifers than you need to expand or maintain your herd?

Once you have a plan, work with your reproduction and genetics teams to begin incorporating genomics in your herd. Genomic testing is more than a one-time test; it’s a management strategy to precisely manage your herd’s genetics for multiple generations.

Several companies offer genomic testing and data results. But few work with you to provide the necessary tools to apply those results on a whole-herd basis. Look for a genomic testing partner that is committed to helping you use the data in your management decisions.
