Help Guard Your Calves From Scours

Newborn calves face many challenges. Don’t let scours be one of them. As the leading cause of calf death and sickness, scours can be responsible for up to 56.5% of mortality among pre-weaned dairy calves.1

Calves that do survive scours can face lifelong setbacks, including delayed growth.2 As heifers, they can be slower to reach the milking string.

Help protect calves from scours with a proactive management program:

  • Ensure a clean, dry calving area.
  • Provide optimum nutrition, starting with quality colostrum collected from healthy cows.
  • Minimize exposure to environmental contaminants.
  • Check out the Calf Wellness Guide from Zoetis for more calf management solutions.

There are two easy options to help prevent scours:

  • Vaccinate healthy, pregnant cows and heifers with SCOURGUARD® 4KC.
  • Administer an oral vaccine, such as CALF-GUARD®, before colostrum uptake.

Proactive protection against scours is the best way to help build calves’ immunity, setting the foundation for a lifetime of productivity. By vaccinating pregnant cows and heifers, newborn calves receive protective maternal antibodies from their dams via colostrum. Work with your veterinarian to establish an effective scours management program.
