When mastitis calls for extended therapy
Dairy producers should take several steps for the proper mastitis therapy protocol:
- Carefully examine the cow to determine whether mastitis is her only visible problem.
- Review the treatment history to find out whether this is a chronic case or a repeat offender.
- Culture milk samples as often as possible.
Unfortunately, there are pesky mastitis cases that don’t want to go away. When relapse rates increase or producers aren’t seeing desired cures, extended therapy may be more effective. However, dairy producers should make sure that the therapy they’re administering is labeled for extended therapy. If the product is not labeled for extended therapy, the treated animal is at risk of meat and milk residues. Work with your veterinarian to make sure you are following proper extended therapy protocols.
